Three Terrifyingly Spooky Social Media Marketing Blunders

It’s that time of year again. Halloween is just around the corner and with it comes reminders of the things that terrify us the most. It just happens to be my favorite holiday, and it got me thinking about three particular social media marketing blunders that make me want to hide under my covers.

Targeting Everyone.

There’s nothing more terrifying than being bombarded with a bunch of follow requests, direct messages or social ads that have absolutely nothing to do with your interests. And as a social media marketer, there’s nothing more terrifying than the thought of wasting my time doing so.

Social media is not just a numbers game. The quality of your audience matters much more than its size. Your content should target an audience that has an interest in your brand and industry.

Engagement is key. Trying to target everyone effectively targets no one.

Not Scheduling Posts.

Nothing makes me un-follow your account more quickly than scrolling through my news feed only to see that you’ve posted several times in a row. As a B2B marketer looking to entice your audience and grow a following, this should scare you.

There are several social media tools out there that allow you to space out your social media posts. Buffer is our favorite here at Springboard, but Hootsuite and SproutSocial do a great job as well.

Scheduling social media content does two amazing things for your social strategy – one, it doesn’t annoy your followers, and two, it increases the chances of your audience engaging with your content by getting it in front of people at different times of the day.

Linking to nothing.

You have an awesome piece of content that you’ve produced, you’ve written the perfect tweet or set of tweets to socialize it on Twitter, and you’ve scheduled the posts and used the right hashtags to directly target your desired audience.

It’s ready for prime time – You post your tweet, someone clicks and the link is broken. Social media marketing fail.

Someone is now not only annoyed at you because the link to this awesome piece of content they hoped to view is broken, they have also gone from a potential conversion to someone turned off from your brand because a lack of reliability on your part. Scary, no?

Before posting, make sure the link you are using works and is the correct link so all potential social media conversions can access your content.
